Solving for X  (2010)

Single or three-channel video, stereo.
Digital photo, digital video, text, sampled sound

All new media objects, whether created from scratch on computers or converted from analog media sources, are composed of digital code; they are numerical representations.

--- Lev Manovitch, The Language of New Media

The visual representation of each panel is based on a "found" object or element. The left panel is video noise, input without modulation. The center panel is a processed digital photograph of a paint-spattered environment; text and numerals were applied in software. The right panel is simply a digital video of clouds moving against a blue sky.

The film footage counter, painted text and numerals, and film countdown leader reference structure and process -- clocks and counters structure time, mathematical functions and algorithms structure data. The audio mirrors the visual composition in layers moving from noise to speech.
