Visions Fugitive grew from photos that I took in the Mojave and around Lake Mead while on a brief family vacation. Starting the project, I had no theme or purpose in mind – I strongly remembered the surreal sense of place – isolation, confrontation – that is the desert, and that memory suggested the direction and tone of the composition. Eleanor Heartney, Contributing Editor for Art in America, included Visions Fugitive in Between Heaven and Earth: Transformations and Sacred Spaces, a show she guest-curated at The College of New Jersey in the winter of 2008. I think her exhibition title frames this work very appropriately.
